Illuminating an Outdoor Pond
Gardens may be thought of as places of plants and critters, but they are often graced with inanimate objects too. These objects include brick edging, water fountains and ponds. It is the dream of many garden owners to install a real working pond in their garden, equipped with lights, fish, aquatic plants and even a fountain. Those who are fortunate enough to own a garden pond understand how important it is to have proper lighting. Novice pond owners often end up installing a pond only to neglect the lights. At night the pond can barely be seen, causing them to re-invent their pond through costly renovation.
Ponds are a natural fit with outdoor lighting because of the effects that happen when light is pointed on them. Moving water caused by fish or a water fall causes the water to ripple and move. Garden lights within the pond cause dazzling reflections which can only be witnessed at night. A well lit pond can become a surreal showcase of sorts which visitors are sure to enjoy. The fish can be witnessed swimming around among the plants with ease. A whole new realm of dimension and delight can be yours with the addition of a few simple light fixtures.
Lights can be added one of two ways: under or above the water. Submersible spot lights are popular because they light up everything inside of the water. Pointing lights into the water from above doesn’t achieve the same effect because the beam can reflect off the water and into your eyes. Underwater lights can be pointed in various directions to achieve full coverage. For your above-water structures such as waterfalls, plants and rocks, dry land spot lights can be used. Many models have replaceable colored panels which can change the color of the beams. In addition to spot lights, floating lights are available which bob at the water’s surface.
